Bridgerule Rush Hour!

It all happened just as they tried to put up the Christmas tree!

Sheep appeared from every direction

A reminder of the chaotic week when the main road was closed and Bridgerule turned in to Picadily circus!

The Carol singers and Father Christmas brightened up the centre of the village

The Christmas Fair in the hall was a great success

Thanks very much Rose for the pictures

Bridgerule Royal Wedding Party

The wedding party was a special treat for the children of Bridgerule on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May

There were games with prizes, a superb tea and finally Royal Wedding Commemorative mugs were given to all the children of Bridgerule that had requested them with the cost of the mugs being donated by Bridgerule Parish Council

Thanks to some superb organisation the event went very smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended

Bingo! - the parish hall hits the jackpot

Thanks very much to everyone at Hedley Wood Caravan and Camping Park for their help and hospitality with running Easter and Summer Bingo events in aid of the the hall fund

Members of the hall committee organised the Bingo and the draw and thanks to a good turnout of locals and holiday makers everyone had an enjoyable evening

As always Hedley Wood was an excellent venue with good food, a good bar, and was excellently decorated for the occasion

Why not give them a ring on 01288 381404 and book one of their mouth watering Sunday roasts for the family - you won't be disappointed!

Recent events in Bridgerule

Poor Barry Williams has been helping on the new hall committee - looks like it's been a bit too much for him!

Seriously though his efforts to look "a bit different" raised just over £270 for Red Nose Day - Well done Barry

Sorry - haven't had time to do a write up for the following events but thought you may be interested in the photos

Thanks very much for sending them in - please keep sending in any photos you think would be interesting

Bridgerule Parish Hall Project

Several meetings of the hall committe have now taken place as enthusiasm for a new hall gains momentum

Members of the committee have attended meetings with the Community Council of Devon, including a quick presentation to The Big Lottery!

A positive reply from Torridge Planning department is also encouraging and the hall site has been measured to see how the best use can be made of the land following their guidance

The committee have visited halls at Ashwater, Bradford, Chilsworthy, Bradworthy and Woolsery to try to get ideas for a new hall in Bridgerule

Thanks very much to the hosts at these halls who gave very interesting talks on the whole process
from planning, design and obtaining grants to building and managing successful new halls

It certainly seems the effort is well worthwile at the end of the day with smart new halls often running several
events at the same time in modern, warm, well insulated meeting rooms and hall areas

Much more to come - please keep an eye on the Buzz and the website and please, please volunteer to help!

There is a new webpage here which will be used to keep everyone up to date with new information on the hall project

A change of use for the old reservoir

Derek Hilliard at Furze Cross bought the old South West Water reservoir last year

As it backs on to his property he was a liitle worried what may happen to it

Now the water board have finally disconnected the pipes he is trying to obtain permission to use it as a residential property

He would like the views of the locals and would be grateful to hear from anyone that has any ideas or suggestions

Carols for Christmas!

Launceston Male Voice Choir and the children of Bridgerule School came to the hall on Wednesday 15th December for an evening of Christmas carols followed by an excellent supper

The evening was arranged and compered by Chris Hitchings and raised £350 in aid of the new Parish Hall fund

There was an excellent attendance and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all

In fact the children sang so well, led by 3 very brave soloists that Father Christmas himself turned up to give them some well deserved presents after the applause had died down

Thanks very much to everyone who took part or helped in any way

The School Christmas Fayre

The school held a very succesful School Fayre on the 4th December in the hall

The event was very well attended and raised a staggering £490

Lots of really interesting stalls, books, knitted items, tombola, a wrapped bottle stall £1 a go to see if the bottle contained wine or water !!!!!, refreshments, a great raffle, a chutney and jam stall, cakes, pretty fabric items, gifts etc. etc.

Thanks to everyone who helped and attended including a very busy Father Christmas - it was nice to see the hall so full

Daffodils!

Everyone in the village will have seen the spectacular display of daffodils in the Spring

There should be even more now thanks to the energetic efforts of the group in the photo, under Colin's supervision. Colin is the one standing behind everyone with the big stick

The bulb planting event and barbeque took place on Saturday 9th October with all profits from the barbeque going to the new hall fund

The event was the first in a whole series of events already planned to build up the new Parish Hall fund

40 kgs of bulbs were planted and a good day and a very good turnout made the event a real success

Bridgerule Village Store Reopening Ceremony

After much hard work Tony and Dawn reopened the New and Improved Bridgerule Store and Post Office on Saturday 24th July

Good food, a barbeque and a spectacular performance of fire eating and juggling by Britains' got talents' Luke Clements made the reopening ceremony a great success

The event was funded by Devon County Council as part of their commitment to help Rural shops thrive

It was also supported by The Rural Shops alliance and the Community Council of Devon

Now we need to do our bit so get down there and spend loads of money to show them it was all worthwhile!

You just have to try the new Luxury Cornish Ice Cream

The Devon Air Ambulance in action
in Bridgerule

Saturday 1st May - a lady was taken to hospital by Devon Air Ambulance

A lot if local events are arranged to support this very worthwhile cause and here you can see it in action in Bridgerule

The Devon Air Ambulance landed on the football pitch, stopping play for about 1/2 hour

Thanks to Rose Hitchens who sent in these photos in and said "What I thought was REALLY nice - was that even though the lads had had their game stopped ... when the helicopter finally took off - everyone clapped. I think we all feel very proud of the work Devon/Cornwall Air Ambulance do - even the youngsters appreciate this amazing service"

I think we all agree!

Bridgerule Mill

According to the Domesday book the mill at "Brige" was a mill that paid 4 shillings

The old Mill in Bridgerule is one of the oldest buildings in the village

There are regular open days and the home made cakes and refreshments will make you want to return

Alan gives regular tours of the mill and explains how everything works

Walks around the 2 lakes and alongside the river make a visit very worthwhile

Another one bites the dust

This is the last you'll see of the public telephone box at Merrifield cross

It was removed on Thursday 8th May

It would be a shame to see the same happen to the one in the village

One of the action plans for the Bridgerule Tomorrow project could be to keep the old type red phonebox - and also to keep it connected

Snow and ice made walking and driving difficult for much of January and February

Thankfully it has warmed up now

The bad weather has taken it's toll on the roads with new potholes appearing

Accident on the Red Post to Launceston road

Fortunately no one was hurt when this truck carrying 20 tonnes of gravel swerved off the main Launceston road

The accident happened between the old railway bridge and Bevills Hill and closed the road for a whole day

A digger unloaded part of the load of gravel and cleared the mud from under the truck so it could be winched out

The Halloween Disco in the hall brings in the crowds

A superbly decorated hall and some horribly frightening individuals greeted the crowds that attended the halloween disco

And that was just the people taking the money on the door

You then had to go through the black tunnel to see the best pumpkin and the best costume competition.

There was a discount on the entrance fee for dressing up so, as you would expect in Bridgerule, nearly everyone dressed up!

Click on the grave stone to see the halloween photos - if you dare!

Country and Western night nets big bucks for the Air Ambulance

An extremely successful Country and Western evening was held at the Parish Hall on Saturday 24 October

It was a complete sell-out with standing room only by the time the main attraction, “The Cornish Hillbillies” made it on to the stage

An extremely skilful and colourful display of line dancing was put on by a number of local people dressed appropriately in country and western outfits

Just as impressive was the amount raised, £631.82 for Devon Air Ambulance. Well done to everyone who worked so hard to put it on!
